Abilene is located near the center of Texas just 150 miles west of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex . Since its beginnings in 1881, Abilene has moved from a cowboy prairie town to a modern city with lots to do and see. Abilene's economy is based on three pillars - oil, agriculture and the military. Dyess AFB is the city's largest employer, C-130s from Dyess fly a variety of airlift missions around the world. The base is the home of the B-1 bomber and the schoolhouse for training all B-1 aircrews.
